Congestion Costs: How Smart Parking Can Be a Solution to Urban Congestion

Tuesday, October 23, 9:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.

Congestion is a major headache for commuters, businesses, urban planners, and economic development authorities costing all stake-holders both time and money. There is a false assumption that parking is part of the congestion problem as it encourages more traffic in urban areas.

In this session you will learn how NPA’s latest research report debunks that myth and reframes issue of congestion to highlight how important it is to keep roadways and curbs clear to facilitate traffic flow and reduce congestion. The session will highlight the causes of congestion (curb surfing, curb idling, double parking, rideshare, etc) and it will outline how much congestion costs cities, commuters, and economic development authorities.

The report’s authors will demonstrate how parking can be an important part of the transportation infrastructure and how shared mobility should include parking in smarter cities as a positive way to reduce congestion.
